Film Duplicating
To duplicate a film in your darkroom, using either the Slimline
Duplicator or Universal Duplicator you will need an original film (to
be duplicated), unexposed duplicating film, and your Rinn duplicator.
- Turn on power.
- With mode switch on "view", position films to be duplicated on the platen, raised dots facing down.
- Set the mode switch to "Duplicate".
- Set the timer to the desired exposure time (20-35 seconds recommended).
- In approved safelight conditions, place duplicating film emulsion side down over the film(s) to be copied.
- Close cover and latch securely. (Leave cover unlatched when not in use).
- Press the duplicate start button.
- When cycle is done, remove the exposed duplicating film and process as you would radiograph film.
To duplicate a film in the Mini-Ray duplicator, in either a
darkroom, the daylight loader of an automatic processor or in a Rinn
Chairside Darkroom you will need an original film (to be duplicated) an
unexposed piece of duplicating film, and your Mini-Ray duplicator:
- Prepare your darkroom, daylight loader or Chairside Darkroom and follow steps 2 and 3 above.
- Press the black button on the side of the unit once. The Mini-Ray comes pre-set to expose between 6 and 8 seconds. Do not hold down the button.
- When the light goes off, your new duplicate is ready to process.
Troubleshooting
- Duplicating film is the opposite of regular film in exposure time. If your duplicate is too light, decrease the exposure time. If your duplicate is too dark, increase the exposure time.
- Films that appear hazy could be caused by: expired film, variable developing temperature, insufficient fixation, or inappropriate safelighting.
- Films that appear black could be caused by: an inactive duplicating bulb, starter or timer; using x-ray film instead of duplicating film; placing duplicate accidentally in fixer before developer; or expired duplicating film.
- To replace a bulb in a Slimline or Universal duplicator, the glass platen must first be removed. Then unscrew and remove the white diffuser plate from the body. The bulbs are now accessible - the long, black tube is the UV bulb (part number 3203) and the red Christmas tree-shaped bulb is the safelight for viewing (3201).
- The Mini-Ray Duplicator runs on a 9V Alkaline battery. If your duplicates become inconsistent, replace the battery.

Processing Film in the Chairside Darkroom
For successful developing of your radiograph, you will need: the
Rinn Chairside Darkroom (53-0102) or Mini-Darkroom (53-0108),
Rinn Rapid Process Developer and Fixer (sold in cases - part number
52-0600R for 6 quarts of each), and your undeveloped film
- Fill the 8 oz. beakers with appropriate chemistry or water (marked on inside of unit). Place all needed items inside the Chairside and close the light filter top.
- Place your arms through the sleeves on the front of the unit. Unwrap the undeveloped film and place the film on a processing hanger (included).
- Dip the film into the developer beaker for 10 to 15 seconds. Then rinse in the water and place in the fixer for 10-15 seconds. Wash the film thoroughly. For archival quality radiographs, the film must be returned to the fixer for at least 4 minutes, and then rinsed in running water for 30 seconds.
